Westgate Chapel stands at the Western end of the High Street in Lewes, find Bull House and we are to the right hand side up a passage way.

The adjoining Bull House is famed as the home of Tom Paine from 1768, while employed as an exciseman. He married his landlord’s daughter and took over his business as a tobacconist, but in June 1774, with the business bankrupt, he and his wife separated and Paine left Lewes for good, sailing for the British colonies in America in October. In 1776 he published Common Sense and became one of the moving spirits in the colonists’ struggle for independence.
